Naija News looks at the top happenings making headlines on the front pages of Nigeria’s national newspapers today Wednesday 15th March 2023.

The PUNCH: Deposit Money Banks have begun to ration the disbursements of old ₦1,000 and N500 notes to their customers amid uncertainty over whether the Central Bank of Nigeria will release the old notes in its custody. This came about 24 hours after the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, announced that old ₦1,000, N500 and N200 notes remained legal tender.

The Guardian: The silence of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on the trillions of naira it mopped from the financial system continues to cast doubt on the possibility of achieving sufficient naira circulation in the near term, after Monday night’s directive urging banks to comply with the Supreme Court ruling extending the validity of the old banknotes to December 31, 2023.

This Day: With exactly three days to Saturday’s governorship and Houses of Assembly elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has advised political parties and their supporters not to see the polls as war, but as a contest. INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this yesterday, at a meeting of the Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security ahead of the elections.

The Nation: Many Nigerians heaved a sigh of relief yesterday as banks started paying the old N200, N500 and ₦1,000 notes to customers. It followed Monday’s directive by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to banks to comply with the March 3 judgment of the Supreme Court.

Daily Trust: The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is yet to release the old N1000 and N500 notes it mopped out of circulation despite asking commercial banks to commence their recirculation, findings by Daily Trust have revealed. This is amid the struggle by commercial banks to meet the increasing demands of customers who besiege their branches across the states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
