LP Campaign Council Speaks On Recruiting Igbo Lawyers To Defend Peter Obi

The Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council (LP PCC) has denied media reports that it recruited only Igbo lawyers to defend its flagbearer, Peter Obi, at the Election Petitions Tribunal.

The Chief Spokesman for the LP PCC, Tanko Yunusa, made the rebuttal in a statement on Tuesday in reaction to the allegation that the lawyers who met with the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, on Monday were mainly from the South East region.

Yunusa said the senior lawyers are from different ethnic groups and were drawn from different chambers to challenge the outcome of the February 25 presidential election.

He stated that the initial list that generated the controversy was incomplete and a second batch of the list was released on Tuesday which listed the 60-member legal team.

Yunusa said the legal team is headed by Dr. Livy Uzoukwu (SAN) and the PCC Legal Directorate is headed by Victoria Shanti, who is from Adamawa State.

He said, “Our head of department for the legal team itself is Victoria Shanti from Adamawa State. She is supported by the Katsina-based legal icon, Yakubu Bawa, who was also among the 60-member team that visited INEC on Monday.

“When you look closely at their names, you will discover that Obi has a diverse list of the legal team.”
