Manchester United midfielder, Casemiro will miss four games as a punishment for receiving two red cards in a season.

Casemiro was dismissed for a challenge on Southampton’s Carlos Alcaraz after 34 minutes of the scoreless draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Referee Anthony Taylor originally intended to issue the midfielder a yellow card for a challenge that touched Southampton striker Alcaraz in the leg before it connected with the top of the ball, but he changed his mind after consulting with the video assistant referee (VAR).

Casemiro was also sent off against Crystal Palace in February this season, bringing his mandatory three-match suspension to four games.

He won’t be able to play in another domestic match until the trip to Nottingham Forest on April 15.

However, United’s coach, Erik ten Hag has not ruled out an appeal as he does not believe that the challenge from the former Real Madrid star was worth a red card.

Despite playing a man down in most parts of the game, Manchester United survived an impressive display by rock-bottom Southampton as both sides failed to score throughout the game.

After the 0-0 draw, the Dutch tactician defended the Brazilian midfielder saying, “When you freeze anything it looks bad – but everyone who knows something about top football knows what is bad and what is fair. And Casemiro is a really fair player. Tough but fair.

“It shows, he had played over 500 games in big leagues and never been sent off. Now it has happened twice.”
