EEDC Blames NLC Strike In Imo For Power Outage In South-East

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has blamed the organized labor union strike in Imo State for the power outage affecting several areas in the South-East.

The head of corporate communications of the EEDC, Emeka Ezeh, stated this via a statement released on Saturday, March 11.

Naija News recalls that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) went on strike on Tuesday to protest against the state government for using the police to disrupt the union’s election in the state.

The union president, Joe Ajaero, alleged that the Imo State Government “sought to influence the outcome of the elections in the state,” by offering gratifications to the delegates to vote for their “chosen candidates.”

“This meddlesomeness was resisted by the delegates who refused the unholy offerings and baits to vote for their chosen candidates,” he added.

Mr. Ajaero asserted that the state government resorted to violence to disrupt the exercise because it was outraged by the delegates’ rejection of its proposals. Hence, the union had to react by going on an indefinite strike.

Ezeh claimed that the lingering industrial action has forced its supplier to shutdown, leaving the power distribution company without any electricity to distribute.

The statement read, “The EEDC wishes to inform her esteemed customers that the loss of supply currently being experienced is a result of the industrial action by the organized labor union in Imo State.

“This led to the shutting down of our source of supply, leaving us with no energy to distribute.

“As a result, all our customers in Imo State are without electricity supply.

“We understand the inconveniences this situation will cause our customers, and we are hopeful that the issue will be resolved within the shortest possible time so we can restore supply to our customers.”

Also, the EEDC used the statement to offer guidance to the affected neighborhoods on how to stop vandals from targeting and damaging the infrastructure that supplies them with electricity.

“We, therefore, appeal to our customers to be vigilant and ensure the electricity infrastructures serving them are not attacked by vandals who might want to take advantage of the situation to attack and vandalize electricity facilities”, the statement added.
