Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, said he is surprised that Roberto Firmino decided to leave Anfield at the end of the season.

Once Roberto Firmino’s contract expires in June this summer, the Brazilian forward will leave Anfield after eight years of service.

The 31-year-old Firmino had been in negotiations for a new contract with Liverpool but decided to walk away in the middle of the negotiations.

Before the World Cup break, Firmino scored seven goals in 13 games in the Premier League. However, after the domestic season resumed, he sustained a calf injury that sidelined him for two months.

He came back in the derby victory over Everton in February but has only made five substitute appearances as Cody Gakpo, who was signed in January, has been favored up front ahead of him alongside Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah.

Nonetheless, he did score Liverpool’s 108th goal in 354 Reds games on Sunday as a substitute, leading Liverpool to a 7-0 victory over Manchester United.

Throughout his time at Anfield, Firmino has assisted Liverpool in winning the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, and Club World Cup. The Brazilian should expect a big farewell on May 20, when Liverpool plays Aston Villa at home, which could be his last game for the club.

While reacting to Firmino’s decision to leave the club on Friday, Jurgen Klopp said, “Surprised? Yes, a little bit – it could go two ways and it went one. And I respect that a lot.

“But it’s completely normal in this kind of long relationship that we have and Bobby has with the club.”

The coach added the striker had told him he wanted “to bring this wonderful story to a positive end”, adding that he “loved the reception he got when he came on against United” last weekend.
