NRC Reacts To Lagos Train Accident As Police Arrest BRT Driver

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has accused the driver of the Lagos State Government-owned bus involved in a collision with a moving train of reckless driving.

Speaking on the incident in an interview with reporters in Abuja, NRC Managing Director,  Fidet Okhiria, said the BRT driver failed to stop when other cars stopped when they got to the level crossing.

The NRC boss added that the driver attempted to cross the rail tracks and beat the train, but was rammed into by the train which was coming from Ijoko in Ogun State.

Okhiria, therefore, urged Lagos drivers to be careful when driving through the level crossing.

He said: “According to the information I gathered at the scene of the incident, they said many cars stopped when they got to the level crossing while the Lagos State Staff Bus driver continued moving, which I don’t know why.

“Maybe the driver thought he could pass before the train got nearer to him. He could not pass, and then the train crushed the bus; that is what we gathered.

“The train was coming from Ijoko to Iddo.

Meanwhile, the Lagos Police Command has arrested the BRT bus driver following the death of six people and injuries sustained by several others in the accident.

Governor Babajide Sanw-Olu made this known on Thursday during a press briefing at the Lagos State Teaching Hospital in Ikeja.
