The Imo State government has reacted to the arrest of a former deputy governor of the state, Gerald Irona.

Naija News reports that the Imo government has denied knowledge of being behind the arrest of Irona.

It was earlier reported on Naija News that security operatives reportedly apprehended Irona.

An eyewitness told newsmen that Irona was arrested from his home in Owerri at about 10:15 am on Wednesday, March 8.

While it remains uncertain why the former Deputy Governor was arrested a statement by his media consultant, Destiny Ugorji accused the State Government of orchestrating his arrest over what he described as “trumped-up charges.”

Ugorchi claimed that the state government was trying to weaken the opposition in Imo State.

He however stated that his principal had already written a statement at the police station and also fulfilled all his bail conditions.

However in its reaction, the Imo government through the governor’s Special Adviser on Public Communications, Collins Ughalaa, denied the allegation saying the governor of the state, Hope Uzodimma, doesn’t interfere with the affairs of the police.

Ughalaa, described the claim as “baseless and unfounded,” noting that it’s unfortunate Ugorji could make such an allegation.

He stated that ” it is unfortunate that the ex-deputy governor’s spokesperson could make such an unfounded claim. The governor does not interfere with the affairs of the police. He respects the rule of law. The governor nor the Imo State government have no hands in the arrest of the ex-deputy governor. (https://blogs.magicjudges.org/) ”
