The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has been directed by the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika to commence an immediate investigation into a collision between a passenger train and a BRT bus.

Naija News had earlier reported that the BTR bus was conveying some civil servants to their workplaces in Lagos on Thursday morning.

Sirika who described the accident as an unfortunate incident promised that NSIB would unravel the causes of the accident and proffer ways of preventing such in the future.

NSIB is the newly created multimodal investigation body which replaced the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) formerly in charge of an investigation into aviation-related accidents.

Sirika in a statement released through his Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Dr James Odaudu solicited the cooperation of members of the public as an investigation by the NSIB team commences.

He commiserated with the government and people of Lagos State, especially those who have lost their loved ones and prayed for the quick recovery of those injured in the accident.

The National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) Southwest Zone, Ibrahim Farinloye on Thursday confirmed that three people are dead, while many sustained varying degrees of injury.

Farinloye said, “Three bodies of staff members (two females and a male) of the State Government, have been recovered. Eighty-four were rescued alive at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital Ikeja.

“The State Government staff bus was trying to cross the PWD/Sogunle rail crossing while the train coming into Lagos from Abeokuta (Ogun State) trapped the bus on its rail.”
