Sneijder Insists Calvin Bassey Does Not Worth €23 million

Former Ajax midfielder Wesley Sneijder has joined the bandwagon of Dutch pundits and retired footballers who have been very critical of the signing of Calvin Bassey.

Naija News recalls that Ajax signed Calvin Bassey from Scottish league Rangers for a then Ajax’s record transfer fee worth €23 million due to how prolific and promising the Nigeria international was in Scotland.

At the start of his stint at Ajax, he was looking like a good buy but now, he has struggled to maintain a spot in Ajax’s first eleven due to his drastic drop in form.

Hence, Calvin Bassey has been the subject of heavy criticism especially the fact that the Dutch team paid heavily to sign him last summer.

In line with that, Wesley Sneijder, a former Inter Milan star, has most recently stressed that the 23-year-old Nigerian defender is not worth the amount Ajax paid for his services.

“I still think €23m is too much,” Sneijder told Veronica Offside, as per, VI.

“This concerns what is demanded of a defender.

“He plays at Ajax, so he will have to be able to play football.

“He might be fantastic in another league. But he has a hard time when he keeps getting released and he has to play from the back.”

He added, “He has to find a middle ground in handing in the balls a little faster. Knowing your weaknesses is also a quality. When you realize that you have to hand in the ball quickly, otherwise things can go wrong.”

Calvin Bassey who has scored a goal and provided three assists in 21 Eredivisie matches has until June 30, 2027, before his current contract with the Dutch team expires.
