The world basketball governing body, FIBA, has rated Nigeria basketball national team, D’Tigers, as the best basketball team in Africa.

The latest FIBA ranking came after the D’Tigers failed to qualify for the 2023 FIBA World Cup which will be hosted by the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia.

Nigeria missed out on the tournament which will start on August 25 and end on September 10, after losing to Angola 59-65 in the final phase of the qualifiers on February 26. The defeat gifted Cape Verde who stunned Nigeria 70-79 last year, D’Tigers’ slot in the forthcoming tournament.

Despite that, the D’Tigers are the top basketball-playing country in Africa and are presently ranked 19th in the world with 461.4 points, according to the recent FIBA rankings.

Tunisia is rated second in Africa and 21st overall with 448.6 points, while Senegal is rated third in Africa but 37th overall. Angola is the fourth-best country in Africa but is ranked 41 globally.

Ivory Coast, who qualified for the World Cup as well, is now rated sixth in Africa and 42nd internationally.

The United States is ranked second in the world in terms of basketball proficiency, 758 points behind Spain, which is often recognized as the top basketball-playing country in the world. In the overall rankings, Australia, Argentina, and France are in third, fourth, and fifth place, respectively.
