Northern Senators Forum Announce New Chairman, Executives

Some high-ranking Senators have begun lobbying for the Senate Presidency and other principal offices ahead of the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly in June.

Naija News learned that aspirants for the principal offices in the Senate and House of Representatives positions are expected to start declaring interest upon the resumption of the National Assembly on March 14.

Apart from the Senate Presidency, other positions that will be filled include the Deputy Senate President, Majority leader, Chief Whip, Minority leader, Deputy Majority leader, Minority whip, and Deputy Minority whip.

According to the tradition of the National Assembly, lawmakers serving two or more terms from the leadership of the parliament are entitled to these positions.

According to The Punch, lobbying for the principal offices had begun in earnest with the parties and the senators-elect working to prevent a repeat of the Bukola Saraki saga in 2015.

Notable among All Progressives Congress (APC) senators who have shown interest in being president of the 10th Senate include Ahmad Lawan (Yobe) Ali Ndume (Borno), Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), Orji Uzoh Kalu (Abia), Jibrin Barau (Kano), Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara) and Mohammed Sani Musa (Niger), among others.

Naija News reports that the APC won 57 senatorial seats, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won 29, the Labour Party(LP) got six, while the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) got two each.

On the other hand, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Young Progressive Party (YPP) got one seat each.
