2023 Election: Meet The Major Contenders In Zamfara For The Governorship Seat

Fourteen out of 18 political parties in Nigeria are jostling for the governorship seat of Zamfara state.

However, the four major political parties expected to battle the Zamfara governorship election in 2023 are the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Below is a highlight of the major candidates contesting the gubernatorial seat on March 11.

Bello Matawalle (All Progressives Congress)

The Governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle, who was the candidate of the PDP in 2019, emerged unopposed as the candidate of the APC.

Matawalle had earlier resolved his feud with a former governor of the state, Abdulaziz Yari, and Kabir Marafa, a former senator.

Dauda Lawal (Peoples Democratic Party)

He is a former Executive Director of First Bank, where he started his banking career as a relationship manager in 2003. He had contested for the governorship ticket of the APC in 2019.

He joined the PDP in May 2022.  Mr Lawal, 56, holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in political science from Ahmadu Bello University.

Ahmed Yahuza (Labour Party)

The 59 year-old politician is one of the strong contenders for the governorship position in this year’s general election.

Yahuza who is running on the platform of the Labour Party(LP) holds only a first-school leaving certificate and has not held any political position.

Saidu Aliyu Dansadau (New Nigeria People’s Party)

Aliyu Dansadau is a former primary school teacher who taught for some years before venturing into politics. The 36-year-old is running for the governorship seat under the platform of the New Nigeria People’s Party.
