All You Need To Know About The Major Governorship Candidates In Kwara State

Nigerians all over the country are done with the major issue of the presidential election and would now focus on electing a governorship candidate who would transform their state for the better.

In Kwara State, over the years some political gladiators have been making the call on who becomes the governor of the state.

However, in the wake of the 2019 governorship election in the state, the All Progressives Congress (APC) commenced a movement tagged, “Otoge” which saw them oust the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

The APC, through the movement, gained strong ground in the state, but the unity in the party did not last long, as some party chieftains expressed their grievances on how the state governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq is running the state.

The crisis within the ruling party saw the son of the former governor of the state, Mohammed Lawal, Hakeem Lawal dumped the party for Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Lawal upon his defection to the SDP won the governorship ticket of the party and would be contesting against the state governor in the 2023 governorship election.

The crisis within the APC did not end there as the governorship candidate of the PDP, Abdullahi Yaman, who was a governorship aspirant under the APC in 2019, is also hoping to pull the “otege” movement down in 2023.

1. APC Governorship Candidate (Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq)

– AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who is the current governor of Kwara State, was (born on 5 February 1960).

– He contested unsuccessfully for the governor of Kwara State in 2003, 2007 and 2011 respectively under the Congress for Progressive Change political party and was successively defeated by Abubakar Bukola Saraki in 2003 and 2007, and by Abdulfatah Ahmed in 2011.

– Abdulrazaq, however, 2019 contested again under the APC and emerged as the governor of Kwara State

2. PDP Governorship Candidate (Abdullahi Yaman)

– Yahman Abdullahi is a former member of the House of Representatives.

– A former governorship aspirant under the APC.

3. SDP Governorship Candidate (Hakeem Lawal)

– A former governorship aspirant under the APC.

– A son of a former governor of Kwara State, Mohammed Lawal.

4. YPP Governorship Candidate (Yakubu Gobir)

– Yakubu Gobir was born in London on 19th October 1965 into the family of the late Ambassador Abubakar Garba Gobir.

The YPP governorship candidate is a philanthropist.
