The fate of the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal in Saturday’s senatorial election for the Sokoto South district is yet to be determined.

The Governor who contested on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is seeking to move to the National Assembly upon the completion of his tenure in May.

His fate would however be determined when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announces the result of the election from his constituency.

Seven of the ten sitting Governors that jostled for senatorial positions in the 2023 elections have already lost.

As earlier reported by Naija News, Governors Ben Ayade (Cross River), Samuel Ortom of Benue state, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu, Darius Ishaku of Taraba, Simon Lalong (Plateau), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi have all lost their senatorial bids.

However, Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state and his Niger State counterpart, Abubakar Bello, have both secured their seats in the Senate.

Atiku Wins In Sokoto

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, as the winner of the presidential election conducted in Sokoto State last Saturday.

Atiku polled a total of 288,679 votes to defeat his opponents to win the City of Caliphate governed by his campaign Director General, Aminu Tambuwal.

The PDP presidential candidate was keenly followed by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, who scored a total number of 285,444 votes.

The candidates of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi and New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, came third and fourth with a total of 6,568 and 1,300 votes respectively.

Announcing the results at exactly 2:38 am on Tuesday, the returning officer for the Presidential election in the state, Prof. Kabiru Bala, the Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, invited party representatives to sign the results.
