The Rivers State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of its personnel over alleged involvement in ballot box snatching on election day.

Reports had emerged earlier that Saturday’s presidential, senate and house of representatives elections in Rivers were marred with electoral violence just like some other parts of the country.

A Twitter user had contacted the Force PPRO, stating that police officers were snatching ballot boxes and destroying voting materials in Igwuruta, Rivers State.

“Watch the Moment Police officers snatched ballot boxes and destr@yed voting materials in Igwuruta, Rivers state. @PoliceNG @inecnigeria,” the patriotic citizen wrote on Twitter.

Responding to the tweet, Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the Rivers State command had been informed of the development, and necessary investigation would be done.

He wrote: “We have contacted Rivers State Command on this. A necessary investigation will be done. Thanks.”

In a press release on Monday (today), the Rivers State command of the force confirmed that the viral video had been investigated and the personnel involved had been arrested.

The police reassured the citizens of their commitment to promoting the rule of law and ensuring that all offenders are punished accordingly.

“Following a video which trended on social media and which suggested the involvement of some police personnel operating in a Pick-up vehicle with inscription “RRT 050” in alleged electoral malpractice, Rivers State Police Command has arrested and taken into custody one officer and three Inspectors for interrogation.

“The police pick-up van in the trending video has also been impounded for thorough investigation.
