Best FIFA Football Awards 2022: Messi And Mbappe To Battle On Monday
Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, who are teammates at Paris Saint-Germain, will compete on Monday for The Best FIFA Men’s Player award for 2022.
Recall that Messi and Mbappe battled it out in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final when Argentina and France met on December 18. Interestingly, Argentina won via penalties.
Aside from Messi and Mbappe, the third major contender for the award will be the Ballon d’Or winner, Karim Benzema.
However, Messi appears to be the front-runner to take home another individual honour at the ceremony in Paris after leading Argentina to victory over Mbappe’s France in the enthralling World Cup final in Qatar.
Messi has won the Ballon d’Or a record seven times, as well as the FIFA award once.
The Ballon d’Or was created in 2016 as a result of a disagreement between FIFA and France Football, the Ballon d’Or’s organizers.
In each of the previous two editions of The Best FIFA award, Messi came in second place to Robert Lewandowski, but the 35-year-old’s World Cup victory was the key moment of 2022.
The winner of the award is chosen by a committee that consists of the head coach and captain of each men’s national team as well as one journalist from each country. Fans are also allowed to vote via FIFA’s officially website.
