Inter Milan overcame 10-man Porto in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 match thanks to a goal from substitute Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku scored at the San Siro in the 86th minute after his initial shot hit the post to give his team a huge advantage ahead of the Champions League round of 16 second leg tie in March.

At 0-0, Porto had two opportunities, but Inter’s Andre Onana denied Zaidu Sanusi and Mehdi Taremi.

The visitors were unable to stop Inter after Otavio was sent off in the 78th minute for two cautionable offenses.

In the 58th minute, Lukaku took the place of former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko. Getting on the end of a cross from Barella, Lukaku’s header came off the post. Reacting quickly to the rebound, the substitute crashed the following attempt past Costa.

Both parties will regret missed chances. Alessandro Bastoni’s header for Serie A’s second-placed Inter was diverted by Diogo Costa in the final seconds of the first half.

When Hakan Calhanoglu’s initial attempt was deflected, Lautaro Martinez headed over when undefended from six yards out.

Porto too had its moments when it was 0-0, but Mateus Uribe and Taremi squandered their opportunities as the Champions League game ended 1-0 in favour of Inter.

The second leg will take place at Porto’s Stadium do Dragao on Tuesday, March 14.

Manchester City played a 1-1 draw in their Champions League round of 16 first leg away against German side RB Leipzig.

Manchester City paid the price for failing to capitalize on their first-half dominance when RB Leipzig forced a stalemate in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 match.

The away team dominated for the first 45 minutes. Ilkay Gundogan took advantage of a defensive error midway through the half and fed Riyad Mahrez, who drove goalward.

However, RB Leipzig came out in the second half with greater zeal, and Benjamin Henrichs twice came within inches of equalizing, first by heading barely over and then by sweeping wide with only Ederson to beat.

When Josko Gvardiol headed in after a short corner, the hosts were finally rewarded for their increasing pressure. The Manchester City goalkeeper was once again called upon to deny Andre Silva at his near post.

With a quick reflex save from close range, Janis Blaswich stopped Gundogan from giving the visitors the lead again moments later. City had a late penalty claim turned down when Henrichs appeared to handle the ball inside the area, but Leipzig held on to earn a draw.

City, bidding to end their wait for a first Champions League trophy, will look to get the job done in the return leg at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, 14 March.
