3. You’re A Threat To Nigeria’s Democracy, PDP Campaign Fires Wike

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Council has stated that Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State is a threat to the nation’s democracy and the peace of the South South state.

Speaking during a news conference in Asaba on Tuesday, spokesman of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council, Charles Aniagwu, alleged that Wike goes around hounding people who disagree with his views.

The campaign council slammed the governor for criticising Atiku’s meeting with Rivers leaders in Abuja and blamed him for making it impossible for the party to hold its presidential campaign in the state.

It called on Nigerians to be wary of undemocratic traits being exhibited by some state governors including Wike who does not allow opposition parties to campaign or hold meetings in their states.

The council, therefore, urged Rivers people and Nigerians to vote Atiku-Okowa ticket to rescue the nation from its current travails and not listen to purported endorsement of the All Progressives Congress (APC) flagbearer, Bola Tinubu, by Wike.

4. Old Naira Notes: Aisha Buhari Speaks After Spreading Fake News On CBN Directives

The wife of the Nigerian President, Aisha Buhari, has issued a disclaimer over the fake Central Bank of Nigeria press release earlier shared on her social media pages.

Naija News earlier reported that Aisha on Tuesday shared a fake circular from the apex bank ordering the recirculation of the old Naira notes until May 10.

The post shared by the president’s wife gathered over two thousand likes within an hour when Naija News checked.

However, the CBN’s Director of Corporate Communications, Osita Nwanisobi, via social media page denied the apex bank issued a directive.

He further urged the public to disregard the circular on social media, as it is fake news.

In a statement shared on her page, the first lady said she has deleted the post stating that a hacker is responsible for the fake news.

She noted that this was not the first time an unauthorized person is having access to her page as well as deleting several social media posts.

5. Naira Crisis: Kaduna, Kogi And Zamfara Initiate Contempt Proceeding Against Emefiele, Malami

A contempt proceeding has been initiated against the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, for their failure to comply with the Supreme Court order extending the deadline for the use of old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes.

Naija News understands that the proceeding was initiated by Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara State governments.

It was learnt that in a fresh document filed before the Supreme Court, the three states, who were the original plaintiffs in the suit against the naira swap policy of the Federal Government, warned Malami and Emefiele about the consequences of their continued failure to comply with the apex court’s order of February 3.

The two sets of Form 48, filed by the team of lawyers representing the three states, form part of the applications now awaiting the Supreme Court’s consideration when proceedings resume on Wednesday.

It would be recalled that the Supreme Court had 10 in an ex-parte application by the three applicant states given an interim order to the CBN to extend the deadline of the old naira notes from the fixed date, February 10.

Other states including Katsina, Lagos, Cross River, Ogun, Ekiti, Ondo and Sokoto have however joined the governments the initial three in the legal battle against the Federal Government.

6. Don’t Throw Your Old Naira Notes Away, Buhari, Emefiele Will Expire On Saturday

A former National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole has publicly disowned the new naira policy championed by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

While addressing a crowd of supporters at Jattu market in Auchi Edo North, Oshiomhole stated categorically that President Buhari is on his own when it comes to the naira redesign policy.

The APC stalwart said he and many other party chieftains had warned the President against going ahead with the naira swap policy but he didn’t listen to them.

Oshiomhole further tackled the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele for executing such a policy which has brought hardship to Nigerians.

The former Edo State Governor told his listeners not to discard their old naira notes, adding that both Buhari and Emefiele will expire after the February 25 presidential election.

He based his argument for Nigerians to keep their money on the Supreme Court ruling which barred the government from proceeding with the February 10 deadline announced for the validity of the old naira notes.

According to him, Buhari should respect the standing of the apex court because it supersedes his directive on the policy.

He also questioned why Buhari did not implement the same policy on the eve of his re-election in 2019, and why he was now attempting to sabotage another person’s election with such a policy.

7. Appeal Court Affirms Oyebanji As Ekiti Governor, Segun Oni Loses

The court of appeal on Tuesday affirmed the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the June 18, 2022, gubernatorial election, Biodun Oyebanji as the governor of Ekiti State.

The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Segun Oni had challenged the victory of Oyebanji in the election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Oyebanji a winner for claiming the highest votes in the governorship election.

A three-member panel while delivering judgement on Tuesday held that the appeal filed by Oni lacks merit.

In the judgments delivered virtually via Zoom, Hamma Barka who read the lead judgment agreed with the judgment of the tribunal.

Oni had alleged that Monisade Afuye, now Ekiti deputy governor, presented fake WAEC results to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

On the allegation of certificate forgery against the deputy governor, Barka held that Oni ought to have called witnesses including a staff of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to prove his allegations.

8. Why I’ll Reverse Naira Redesign Policy If Elected – Kwankwaso

The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has promised to reverse the naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Addressing supporters in Funtua, Katsina State on Tuesday, Kwankwaso said he would reverse the CBN policy because it was targeted at making poor Nigerians suffer.

The former Governor of Kano State stated that he would allow Nigerians to deposit the old 200, 500, and 1,000 naira banknotes in their respective banks and not ban them.

He asserted that the policy of the apex bank if not reviewed would further put more Nigerians in abject poverty, hunger, and untold hardship.

The NNPP flagbearer said implementing the apex bank’s policy in a country like Nigeria where 133 million citizens are poor and the nation’s economic situation is a recipe for a crisis.

9. CBN Speaks On Issuing Fresh Directive On Old Naira Notes

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has distanced itself from a fake statement ordering the distribution of old 1000, and 500 naira notes.

Naija News reports that social media has been awash with reports that the apex bank announced plans to recirculate old 1000 and 500 naira notes. The fake report claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari had directed the CBN to carry out the recirculation after a closed-door meeting.

But in a swift statement on Tuesday morning, CBN’s Director of Corporate Communications, Osita Nwanisobi, described the statement as fake.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria has been drawn to some fake and unauthorized messages quoting the CBN as having authorized the Deposit Money Banks to collect the old N500 and N1,000 banknotes.

“For the avoidance of doubt, and in line with Mr President’s broadcast of February 16, 2023, the CBN has been directed to only reissue and recirculate the old N200 banknotes and this is expected to circulate as legal tender for 60 days up to April 10, 2023.

“Members of the public should therefore disregard any message and/or information not formally released by the Central Bank of Nigeria on this subject.

10. Kogi Explosion: No INEC Office Was Affected, Commission Gives Update On Polls

Following the explosion of some parts of Kogi State by suspected terrorists, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has come out to confirm that none of its offices in the state was affected.

Naija News reported earlier that there was a commotion on Monday evening in the Okehi Local Government Area (LGA) of Kogi State after some unknown gunmen suspected to be terrorists reportedly blew off the administrative offices in the area.

According to SaharaReporters, the attacked building is close to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) facility in the local government area.

It could be recalled that the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), formerly known as Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihād, had claimed responsibility for several attacks in the state recently.

However, in his reaction, the Kogi State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr Hale Longpet on Tuesday confirmed that non of the INEC offices were bombed in the incident.

According to him, even though the INEC office is close to the local government Secretariat, it was the Okehi Local government council Secretariat that was attacked and not the INEC office.
