APC Seeks Out-of-court Settlement Over Naira Redesign Crisis

The leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked the Federal Government and the governors elected under the party to settle out of court over the naira redesign policy.

The APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, brokered a truce between the federal government and the governors at a meeting held on Monday at the party’s National Secretariat, Abuja.

According to the Nation, Adamu asked both the government and the APC governors to settle out of court ahead of the Supreme Court’s hearing on the matter on Wednesday.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, who arrived from Ethiopia, represented the government at the meeting.

While Governors Nasir El-Rufai, Yahaya Bello, and Bello Matawalle of Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara States, respectively represented their colleagues at the meeting.

The three governors and some of their colleagues have been kicking against the cash swap policy instituted by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Subsequently, the governors dragged the Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to the Supreme Court over the naira swap policy, seeking an order that would declare the policy and naira redesign as illegal.

The chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Kebbi Governor, Atiku Bagudu, and former Zamafara Governor, Abdulaziz Yari also joined the meeting.

The meeting which lasted almost two hours was also attended by Deputy National Chairman (North) Senator Abubakar Kyari; Deputy National Chairman (South) Chief Emma Eneukwu and the National Secretary, Otunba Iyiola Omisore.

It was further gathered that efforts by newsmen to get a comment after the meeting failed as Adamu, who led the governors and the minister out of his office, barred journalists from asking questions.

Recall that Abdullahi Adamu had met with governors elected on the platform of the ruling party on Sunday in Abuja.

Naija News learned that Adamu on Sunday joined the governors to call on President Muhammadu Buhari to obey the Supreme Court order on the naira redesign policy.

Adamu while reading the resolution of the meeting said the naira redesign policy was hurting Nigerians and the country’s economy and called on Buhari to intervene.
