Leigh Wood’s reign as the WBA featherweight champion is over after the aggressive Mauricio Lara overcame the British fighter in Nottingham.

The 34-year-old appeared to be in control of the fight and was landing blows with ease through round-three to six before Lara unleashed a magnificent left hook in the seventh round.

Wood hit the ground hard but boldly got to his feet. However, his trainer, Ben Davison, noticed that Wood was badly hurt after the fall and decided to give up the bout.

As Mexican Lara claimed his first world championship on Saturday, February 18, this is Wood’s third defeat in 29 contests.

After the bout, the British featherweight boxer congratulated Mauricio Lara in an interview with DAZN.

He said; “Congratulations to Mauricio Lara, he’s a great fighter. I made a mistake and paid for it.”

Wood, who was ahead on all three judges’ scorecards at the time of the stoppage due to the heavy cut on Wood’s face, will now exercise his rematch clause, according to promoter Eddie Hearn.

Hearn added: “Firstly, well done to Leigh Wood for taking a fight like this – everyone knows how dangerous Mauricio Lara is.

“I thought Leigh was cruising that fight, won four rounds on the spin, but Mauricio Lara came with a left hook from the heavens.”
