Despite Arsenal’s 3-1 loss to Manchester City, manager Mikel Arteta says he now has “more belief” that his club can win the title.

Manchester City have surpassed Arsenal on goal differential as a result of the loss at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.

Arsenal have a game in hand and a five-point lead after defeating Manchester United on January 22. However, since then, they have only accrued one point out of a possible nine.

During the game, Kevin de Bruyne capitalized on Takehiro Tomiyasu’s backpass to score the game’s first goal. However, once de Bruyne was substituted in the second half, supporters threw bottles at him.

After Eddie Nketiah was fouled by Ederson and Bukayo Saka was awarded a penalty kick, Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland struck to give City three valuable points.

After the 3-1 defeat at the hands of a former boss, Pep Guardiola, Mikel Arteta said: “I have more belief than I had before the game. With the performance and the level the team put in, we had the feeling we could beat them. Until the second goal, we had them.

“But we gave them three goals and the game at the end. Certain errors at this level, you can’t make. At the same time, the team put the level very high.

“The difference was in the boxes, they had three chances and they put them away. We had chances and we didn’t put them away.”

Although the loss left him “disappointed,” the Spanish manager said of City: “They [City] are the best team in the world, and we matched that level.” After that, beating them simply requires doing some things better.

“I have more belief [to win the league] because I see a team going head-to-head with them”, he added. “You have to go to the next one and in three days we have another game. I have more belief in my players.”
