Spanish La Liga club Valencia, who are struggling to avoid relegation, have announced former Spanish footballer Ruben Baraja as their new manager.

Valencia have had 10 permanent managers in less than nine years, including 47-year-old Ruben Baraja.

Baraja is the successor of Gennaro Gattuso who resigned last month after only seven months in charge of the Spanish club.

The former Spain international played 364 games for Valencia between 2000 and 2010 and also earned 43 Spain caps before he retired.

Valencia have suffered six defeats in their previous seven league games and are currently third from the bottom and one point from safety.

Among the teams Baraja has coached are Elche, Rayo Vallecano, Sporting Gijon, Tenerife, and Real Zaragoza.

Naija News recalls that Voro Gonzalez, who was acting as interim manager for the ninth time after Gattuso’s dismissal, lost each of his three games in charge of the Spanish club.

While announcing the arrival of Ruben Baraja in a statement on Tuesday, Valencia said: “‘Pipo’, one of the most decorated and illustrious players in the history of Valencia CF, knows the idiosyncrasies of the club and returns home to contribute with his professionalism and commitment as a coach after forging his legendary figure in the 2000s by helping to win two La Liga titles, a Uefa Cup, a European Super Cup and a Copa del Rey.

“In the coming days he will take charge of the team at the Ciutat Esportiva de Paterna and his coaching staff will include another Valencia CF legend, Carlos Marchena.”
