Calvin Bassey Is Not Bothered By Criticisms From Ajax Fans

Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey claims that he has not been impacted negatively by the high expectations of Ajax’s fans since he joined the Dutch club last summer.

Calvin Bassey has come under a lot of fire since he joined Ajax from Glasgow Rangers in July of last year for a club-record €23 million.

Due to Bassey’s subpar offensive skills and lack of passing ability, club veterans Wesley Sneider and Rene Van der Gijp have questioned the club’s decision to hire him.

The 23-year-old Nigerian international received plenty of playing time while playing for former manager Alfred Schreuder, starting 16 league games and scoring one goal.

However, under manager John Heitinga, he has not made a single start and was left on the bench for their Sunday league match against RKC Waalwijk.

In an interview with Ajax Showtime, Bassey asserted that he is not worried about the high demands of the team’s supporters.

He said, “I think it’s a wonderful club with a lot of history. When you go to a club as big as Ajax there will always be certain expectations.

“I think it’s good to set the bar high and it’s certainly high here. We also expect that of ourselves. So we also demand a lot from each other.”

He added, “I want to better understand Ajax’s style and adapt myself to it. I want the style to suit me more. That’s my goal now.

“I can do anything as long as I want it bad enough.”
