The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has urged the Council of State to look at the merit of holding all the elections in one day in March to avert negative security consequences.

NEF made this known in a statement by its Director of Publicity and Advocacy, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed.

The group called on the Council to also advise President Muhammadu Buhari to review the timelines for ongoing currency exchange.

Baba-Ahmed said: “I hope they will review the very difficult conditions under which the Nigerian citizen lives today, and advise on measures to relieve the poor, in particular of avoidable hardships. They should look at the merit of holding all the elections in one day in March to avert negative security consequences.

“The council should advise the president to review the timelines for ongoing currency exchange. It should assure the nation that our democracy is safe and our economic unity is not being threatened.”

Naija News had earlier reported that President Buhari will on Friday convene an emergency Council of State meeting to discuss the crisis bedeviling the nation.

Some of the issues that will be discussed at the meeting are naira scarcity, petrol shortage, and insecurity ahead of the general elections.

The meeting which will be held at the Council Chambers, Presidential Villa, Abuja, at 10 am, will also discuss the protests arising from the naira scarcity in various parts of the country.

The meeting will take major decisions to douse tension ahead of elections and avert a potential national crisis given anger over the scarcity of new naira notes.
