The football authority in Wales has agreed to pay both their women’s national team and men’s national team the same salary.

This means that Wales have joined the likes of the United States of America, England, Brazil, Australia, Norway, and New Zealand in paying their international players (both males and females) the same financial benefits.

On Wednesday, the Football Association of Wales [FAW] announced that the body has agreed on a deal that will see equal pay come into effect immediately.

The senior men’s team for Wales has agreed to take a 25% wage drop so that the women’s squad can receive a 25% pay increase, creating parity for Wales’s representation.

The new equal pay policy is in effect until 2027.

Wales’ female football players have never received the same compensation as Wales’ male players for playing international football.

In reaction to the new development, Wales women’s national team coach Gemma Grainger, who recently signed a new contract to lead the national team until 2027, claims that paying her team similarly will send a strong statement.

The English female tactician said: “I am really happy about equal pay, it is about equality.

“Hopefully that collaboration will continue to grow.

“Equality and making sure what we have here is equal is so important to us. The women’s game is growing and will continue to grow.”
