The Labour Party has reacted to the arrest of its former Director General, Doyin Okupe, by the Department of State Services (DSS) at Terminal 1 of Murtala Mohammed.

According to the party, the act by the DSS was an embarrassing wrongdoing against the Labour Party chieftain.

Naija News reported earlier that Okupe was arrested by DSS on the order of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Reacting to the development, the Chief spokesman of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council (LPPCC), Yunusa Tanko, told Tribune that the arrest was unwarranted given the fact that it is public knowledge that Okupe met with the conditions of his release after his conviction over money laundering.

He submitted that: “I can confirm to you that Dr Doyin is fine, he left Awolowo way the DSS facility moments ago and the DSS have apologized to him for the error they have done in re-arresting him.

“For us, we felt this is an embarrassment for somebody who has already paid for the accusation which was levelled against him at the federal high court because if he had something left, he would not have left the premises of the court as a free man.

“This was orchestrated to embarrass him, the DSS has apologies to him, which I can confirm to you directly, that he is freed and he is proceeding on his Journey.”

It would be will be recalled that Okupe was convicted of violating the money laundering act by receiving cash in excess of the law’s provision from the office of the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, while he was in office.

The presiding judge, Ijeoma Ojukwu, however, gave him the option of paying a fine of N500,000 for each of the 26 counts he was found guilty of, making a total of N13 million instead of going to jail.

Okupe is understood to have paid the fine and avoided a jail term.

He subsequently resigned as the DG of the Labour Party presidential campaign council.
