Gunmen Kidnap Catholic Priest, Others In Fresh Attack In Enugu

At least four people were reportedly killed on Tuesday evening when unknown gunmen stormed Nzomiwu Street in the Eziani community, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Reports reaching Naija News on Wednesday revealed that the assailants invaded the community yesterday, shooting aimlessly and thereby killing the victims; three males and a female said to be pregnant.

Sources who confirmed the incident to The PUNCH said the target of the gunmen could not be ascertained yet as they only came in shooting into the air and immediately fled the scene after killing the victims.

Confirming the attack in a press statement, the state police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the bodies of the victims had been deposited at the mortuary.

Ikenga said, “Police/military operations have been intensified in Ihiala and its neighbouring town as operatives responded to a distress call in the early hours of Tuesday on Nzomiwu Street, Eziani, Ihiala, recovered lifeless bodies, three males and one female at the scene.

“Preliminary information revealed that the criminal elements armed with Ak47, started shooting indiscriminately and unprovoked, unfortunately, bullets hit four unarmed civilians. The bodies have been deposited in the morgue.”

Top Nigerian Lawmaker Escapes Assassination As Gunmen Attack Convoy

Meanwhile, the Ondo State Police spokesperson, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, says an investigation has begun into the suspected assassination of a federal lawmaker, Tajudeen Adefisoye.

Naija News learnt that the convoy of Adefisoye, representing Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency of Ondo State at the National Assembly, was attacked on Monday in his hometown of Idanre while returning from a private function.

It was gathered that the convoy of the federal lawmaker, who is also a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was punctured with bullets as the gunmen directly aimed at his vehicle.

Confirming the incident in a statement, Adefisoye accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the House of Representatives, Festus Akingbaso, of masterminding the violent attack.

He said the gunmen shot directly at his car, adding that the incident has been reported to the police and Nigeria Army.

He said: “The assailants were hired by the PDP candidate (Mr Akingbaso) for the House of Representatives. They shot directly at my vehicle but I thank God I was able to escape and have reported the case to the police and the Nigeria Army for investigation”.

PDP Reacts

Reacting, Akingbaso, in a press statement, denied the allegations linking him to the violent attack stressing it is a deliberate attempt to smear his name.

He said: “We categorically assert that we have no involvement in this incident and the mention of our campaign team in this unfortunate incident is nothing but a deliberate attempt to smear our good name in the mud, one which we shall continue to protect at all cost.

“This latest development is another obvious attempt by the accusers to evade the scrutiny of the police and DSS, who are currently investigating him (Adefisoye) and his team for violence which occurred a few days ago in which many members of the PDP were attacked and injured”
