The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate contesting the Borno Central Senatorial District seat in the 2023 general elections, Mohammed Umara Kumalia, has been disqualified.

Naija News reports that the former House of Representatives member was ruled out of the contest following a ruling of the Federal High Court in Maiduguri yesterday.

At the court session on Monday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was asked to revoke the senatorial ticket of the PDP candidate, stating that the two-term House of Representatives member did not participate in the party’s primary to have emerged as a standard flagbearer for the forthcoming polls.

PDP had named Kumalia as its candidate for Borno Central after Jubril Tatabe, who originally won the election was alleged to have voluntarily withdrawn from the race.

Tatabe, however, went to court to challenge his replacement. He claimed that his signature was forged by those who presented his alleged letter of resignation from the race to INEC.

Despite Tatabe’s objection to his replacement, INEC published Kumalia’s name as the recognised candidate of the PDP for Borno Central.

Tatabe, however, pressed on with charges praying the Federal High Court in Abuja to help him retrieve his mandate, which he argued was snatched by some powerful party members.
