Roberto Martinez Becomes New Cristiano Ronaldo’s Coach

Roberto Martinez has become the new head coach of Cristiano Ronaldo’s national team, Portugal.

Roberto Martinez who was Everton’s manager led Belgium to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and bowed after the team failed to proceed beyond the group stage.

The 49-year-old Spanish tactician replaced Fernando Santos, the Portuguese tactician who led Portugal to a quarter-final defeat at the hands of Morocco in December 2022.

Just as Martinez resigned after the Qatar World Cup after six years in charge of Belgium, Santos who helped Portugal to win their first European championship in 2016, resigned after the World Cup.

After the Portugal football association confirmed him as the country’s new head coach, Roberto Martinez said: “I am very happy to represent one of the national teams with the best talent in the world.

“I am very excited to be here. From the first time I spoke with the president of the federation, I knew this was a sporting project that would excite me.

“I understand there are great expectations and big objectives, but there is a great team of people at the federation and I have great excitement that together we can achieve those objectives.”

While Portugal FA president Fernando Gomes described Martinez’s appointment as “an important moment for the national team.”
