Some unknown gunmen have reportedly kidnapped a yet-to-be-identified number of people from a train station in the Igueben Local Government Area of Edo State.
Reports reaching Naija News on Sunday morning revealed that the victims were waiting to board a train to Warri in Delta State when the assailants stormed the station shooting aimlessly.
The report said security operatives had been deployed to bushes around the area to rescue the victims and arrest the fleeing kidnappers.
It is yet unclear if there was a record of casualty (s), but the information made available to newsmen claimed travellers sustained bullet wounds.
Confirming the attack in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer in Edo, Chidi Nwabuzor, explained that the abductors, armed with AK 47, invaded the train station on Saturday evening and began shooting into the air before abducting their victims, who were intending travellers.
“This is to inform the gentlemen of the press that today, 7th of January, 2023, at about 1600hrs, men armed with AK 47 riffles attacked the train station at Igueben, Edo State and kidnapped an unspecified number of passengers who were waiting to board the train to Warri.
“The kidnappers who shot sporadically into the air before kidnapping some passengers left some persons with bullet wounds. The Area Commander Irrua, DPO Igueben Division, and men have visited the crime scene with members of the Edo State Security Network, local vigilantes, and hunters to protect the lives and property of the remaining passengers,” the police statement read.
Naija News recalls that the latest train attack is coming barely a year after dreaded terrorists attacked and killed scores of train passengers onboarding an Abuja-Kaduna train.
The Abuja-Kaduna train attack forced the Federal Government to suspend train operations on the route until recent times when the verdict was revoked after a series of checks.
