Reasons have emerged on why the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, and his New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) counterpart, Rabiu Kwankwaso didn’t pursue their 2023 ambitions on the platform of the Accord Party.

Speaking on the development, the Accord Party National Deputy Chairman of the party, Innocent Igboekwe said Obi and Kwankwaso shunned the party due to the expired leadership it is parading.

He added that the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to continue dealing with the expired leadership also contributed to the crisis rocking Accord Party

Igboekwe made the observation while speaking with newsmen shortly after a meeting with leaders of the party where he observed that any candidate that runs on the party’s platform may eventually lose such a seat except no one challenges the leadership saga rocking Accord Party.

He revealed that particularly, Kwankwaso had approached the party about his presidential ambition but couldn’t continue discussions due to the leadership crisis affecting the party.

Explaining his stand, Igboekwe said: “In 2015, INEC wrote to Accord Party, telling her that the leadership tenure had expired since 2014 because the convention held in 2010. For its failure to conduct a congress as at when due, hence its NEC has expired. Suddenly, we discovered that INEC started dealing with Accord party again. It’s only natural and rational that whoever contests election under the expired platform can’t survive unless no one is ready to petition.”

Naija News recalls there were reports of a planned alliance between Obi and Kwankwaso for the 2023 presidential election but when things didn’t work out, both individuals are now pursuing their ambitions separately.
