Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy underwent surgery to treat a fractured finger he sustained during training last week.

Edouard Mendy hasn’t played for the Blues since he returned from the World Cup due to a shoulder injury.

The 30-year-old Senegal goalkeeper sustained the injury in Qatar, when they lost to England in the round of 16, which ended their journey in the tournament.

For Chelsea’s last three games, Spain’s Kepa Arrizabalaga has filled in for the Senegalese goalie.

The 1-0 loss to Manchester City on Thursday drops Chelsea to 10th place in the Premier League.

On Sunday at 16:30 GMT, they will square off against Manchester City once more in the FA Cup third round.

Meanwhile, the Football Association will meet with Manchester United after hearing homophobic chants during Friday’s 3-1 FA Cup third-round victory over Everton at Old Trafford.

The chant, which targeted Everton manager Frank Lampard, was in reference to his connections to Chelsea, his old team.

“We strongly condemn the use of the term and we are determined to drive it out of our game”, a statement from the FA read.

In January 2022, the Crown Prosecution Service classed the chant ‘rent boy’ as a homophobic slur and said fans singing it during matches were committing a hate crime.

Those found to have used the words could face prosecution.

An FA statement read: “We stand firmly against all forms of discrimination and we are striving to ensure our game is a safe environment for all, which truly embraces diversity and challenges hateful conduct both on and off the pitch.”

When the two clubs faced off in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge in October, managers Graham Potter of Chelsea and Erik ten Hag of United both spoke out against homophobic chants.
