President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his condolences to the government and residents of Kebbi State after a boat carrying farmers capsized this week.

Reports went viral that a boat carrying approximately 100 farmers capsized in the Koko/Besse Local Government Area of Kebbi State, reportedly killing more than 20 farmers.

The chairman of the Koko/Besse Local Government Area, Yahaya Bello, stated that the tragedy occurred on Tuesday night when a rickety boat was transporting more than 100 rice farmers to Samanaji, a nearby riverine village.

He stated that at the time of the report, 80 of the boat’s occupants had been saved, while 10 were still missing and 10 had been found dead.

In a statement issued by the president’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, which was headlined “President Buhari mourns boat mishap victims in Kebbi State”, the President expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost loved ones in the tragedy.

He asked for further prayers for the people who were saved but are still receiving medical care and also prayed that the Almighty God would accept the souls of those who died in the accident.

The statement read: “The President commends the efforts of rescue workers who worked for days searching for the missing persons, while calling on stakeholders to pay more attention to proper regulation of transportation by boats, especially in rural areas.”
