To determine the severity of his hamstring injury, Liverpool center-back Virgil van Dijk will visit a specialist.

Virgil van Dijk, who has been in every league game for Liverpool in the ongoing 2022-2023 season, was replaced at halftime in Monday’s loss to Brentford.

Although there is no estimate of how long Van Dijk will be sidelined, the injury seems more serious than first imagined.

Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez, and Nathaniel Phillips are the Reds’ center-back alternatives in the absence of the Netherlands international.

After Liverpool’s league defeat to Brentford on Monday, the club’s manager, Jurgen Klopp said: “Virgil felt a little bit the muscle and said it is fine, and he is a very good judge of this kind of things. But I didn’t want to take any risks.

“The physios looked quite happy when I said we don’t take risks. It’s not an injury, he just felt the intensity.”

This season, Liverpool has struggled with several injuries, with attackers Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota both fighting their way back to full fitness after serious injuries.

Their following Premier League games are on the road on January 14 against Brighton and at home on January 21 against Chelsea. Liverpool is now sixth in the Premier League and is seven points off the top four.

Before they will resume their league campaign, they will be in action in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday. In the round, Liverpool will play Wolverhampton Wanderers.
