The head coach of the United States national team, Gregg Berhalter, and his wife, Rosalind had a heated dispute over 32 years ago which has returned to hunt Berhalter’s coaching career.

In 1991, according to the statement from Gregg Berhalter and Rosalind, the couple went on a date at a local bar. While at the bar, a disagreement broke out which forced Berhalter to kick Rosalind on her leg.

The incident only put their relationship on hold for seven months before they were able to forge ahead in their relationship. Afterward, they got married and remained together for over 25 years.

To date, they are still happily married but the incident came to public notice again in December 2022 without the consent of Rosalind.

Due to the viral reports about the incident, US Soccer had to set up a panel to investigate the matter. Also, Rosalind and coach Berhalter who led the USA to a round of 16 finish in the Qatar World Cup had to make a joint statement over the incident.

Their statement read: “We had been dating for four months when an incident happened between us that would shape the future of our relationship.

“One night, while out drinking at a local bar, Rosalind and I had a heated argument that continued outside. It became physical and I kicked her in the legs.”

After the statement from the couple, the US soccer body issued a statement on Tuesday which read: “Upon learning of the allegation against US Men’s National Team head coach Gregg Berhalter on Dec 11, 2022, US Soccer immediately hired Alston & Bird LLP to conduct an independent investigation into the matter.

“Through this process, US Soccer has learned about potential inappropriate behavior towards multiple members of our staff by individuals outside of our organization.

“We take such behavior seriously and have expanded our investigation to include those allegations.

“We appreciate Gregg and Rosalind coming forward to speak openly about this incident. Consistent with our commitment to transparency, we will share the results of the investigation publicly when it is complete.

“US Soccer condemns violence of any kind and takes such allegations very seriously.”

As it stands, Gregg Berhalter is no longer contracted to US soccer as his contract expired in December. However, he has been cooperating with the soccer body in the ongoing investigation.

The US Soccer is expected to announce a new head coach for the US men’s national soccer team any moment from now ahead of the team’s games against Serbia (January 26) and Colombia (January 29).
