Aston Villa Humble Tottenham Hotspur At Home

Tottenham Hotspur led by coach Antonio Conte started 2023 in the worst possible way as they went down 0-2 at home against Aston Villa.

Aston Villa’s Emiliano Buendia and Douglas Luiz’s goals at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium sent the hosts to their fourth Premier League defeat in six games.

When Emiliano Buendia capitalized on a Hugo Lloris mistake just after halftime, Spurs, who needed to win to regain possession of the fourth place and go back over Manchester United, put on another lackluster first-half performance.

Aston Villa played tenacious defense, keeping Spurs at a distance throughout, and doubled their lead when Douglas Luiz, whose long-range effort had caused Lloris to err in conceding the opening goal, finished off a smooth team goal from John McGinn’s assist.

Douglas Luiz scored against Hugo Lloris to make it 2-0 in favour of Aston Villa on Sunday, January 1, 2023.

Spurs, who were without Dejan Kulusevski due to a minor ankle injury, could not muster much of a response. They failed to even register a shot on target in the second half.

Coach Conte decided to give Harry Kane a secondary role in the game and Heung-Min Son lacked sharpness in most parts of the game.

Due to the poor display which earned Spurs just 2 shots on target in over 90 minutes, the home crowd were left with no choice but to boo their club at the final whistle.

The outcome of the game has increased the pressure on coach Conte and enabled former Arsenal manager Unai Emery to extend his unbeaten streak against Spurs to four Premier League games.

Villa’s victory over Spurs keeps them in 12th place in the standings while Spurs remain in the 5th spot, two points below 4th-placed United.
