Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri has asked the Central Bank Governor (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, not to extend the deadline for the phasing out of the old notes.

Naija News recalls that the apex bank had announced the shelf life of the old N1,000, N500, and N200 Naira notes end on January 31st, 2023.

But the Senate on Wednesday sought an extension to June 30th, 2023 to allow Nigerians living in rural areas to comply with the CBN directive.

The extension request follows a motion titled, “Urgent need to extend the withdrawal of old currency from circulation” raised by the Senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume.

Reacting to the development in a tweet on Thursday, Omokri urged Emefiele to acquit himself like a patriot and resist the pressure from the Senate to extend the deadline for the phasing out of the old notes.

The controversial author said the January 31 date must stand, adding that those who have stockpiled cash for elections must be frustrated.

He wrote: “The CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, must acquit himself like a patriot and resist the pressure from the Senate to extend the shelf life of the old Naira to June 30. The January 31 date must stand. All those who have stockpiled cash for elections must be frustrated!
