The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has expressed sadness over the tragedy that occurred on Tuesday at the 2022 Calabar Carnival in Cross River State.

Naija News earlier reported that a vehicle rammed into a crowd at the Bikers/Exotic Cars Parade in Calabar, killing seven persons and injuring 29 others.

It was gathered that a driver of a Toyota Camry vehicle lost control of his wheels and plunged into the crowd watching the activities of the festival at the Bogobiri axis of the carnival route.

Confirming the number of casualties, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Maikano Hassan, said those injured included 21 male adults, three women, two male children, and three female children.

The FRSC official added that the victims were rushed to the Navy Reference Hospital in Calabar and the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), leading to an abrupt end of the event.

Reacting in a series of tweets via his Twitter page on Wednesday, Obi commiserated with the families of the victims of the tragedy and described the sad incident as a “huge loss” to Nigerians.

He also condoled with the immediate and extended families of the victims, the government, and people of Cross River State and Nigerians in general over the tragedy.

The former Governor of Anambra State also prayed for the quick recovery of the injured and asked God to grant eternal rest to the dead.

He wrote: “The unfortunate incident at the annual Calabar Carnival is a huge loss to the immediate and extended families of the victims, the government and people of Cross River State and Nigerians in general. I am saddened by the loss of lives, many injuries recorded.

“I sincerely commiserate with the families who lost their loved ones in this ugly incident and pray for the quick recovery of the injured. May God grant eternal rest to the dead.
