The PUNCH: Twenty-four hours to Christmas, many Nigerians have been unable to travel to different destinations due to astronomical rise in bus fares, acute petrol and aviation fuel scarcity, rising insecurity and declining household income. Usually in this period, many citizens travel to different parts of the country to celebrate Christmas and the New Year. While some return to their ancestral homes to reunite with their kith and kin, others take breaks from their regular schedules to visit tourist destinations

This Day: With Christmas just 24 hours away, majority of Nigerians shopping for the festivity are going through harrowing times. Many may end up with bleak celebrations. This is because the prices of essential goods and services have continued a steep rise. Petrol scarcity has also persisted, resulting in very high intra-state and inter-state transportation fares. Apparently echoing the pains of the masses, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in a Christmas message issued yesterday in Abuja lamented that Nigerians were currently going through “dark times,” and called for urgent action from government.

The Nation: Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, yesterday dealt the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate,Alhaji Atiku Abubakar,a fresh blow in their face off ahead of the February election. The governor sealed off the Atiku/Okowa campaign office located in the Port Harcourt Government Reservation Area (GRA),after turning down a request by the Campaign Management Committee in the state to use the residential building for political reason. Atiku supporters in the state yesterday protested the government action as a violation of right of free expression.

Daily Trust: The Lagos State Government claimed to have completed the construction of eight collector drains and the dredging of 14 channels across the state to address flooding. Daily Trust Saturday tracked about a dozen of the projects in eight local government areas and found that while the channels, also known as canals, have not been dredged in some communities as claimed, the collector drains failed to stop flooding in most places they have been constructed.
