Blackout, Naira Scarcity Loom As Electricity, Bank Workers, Others Join Labour Strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have rejected the planned moves by the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu to totally remove fuel subsidy if he emerges as the President of Nigeria in 2023.

The labour unions stated that it is wrong for any government to contemplate such a move.

The unions made their positions known when a former Chairman of NLC in Cross River State, John Ushie spoke on the development in Calabar during a Labour Party campaign rally.

He said; “We are completely against the removal of fuel subsidy.

“It is very wrong for any government to even contemplate it.

“Let the government fix all the nation’s refineries first of all before they can begin to think about subsidy removal. Let the government think towards refining our crude oil locally.”

It would be recalled that Tinubu while speaking on Thursday in Lagos State at a luncheon with business owners titled ‘business forward’ promised to take bold decisions that will turn the economy around, including removing fuel subsidy, which has rendered the country vulnerable and broke.

According to the APC candidate, Nigeria will not continue to subsidise fuel consumption in neighbouring countries.

He said: “How can we be subsidising fuel consumption of Cameroon, of Niger, of Benin Republic. No matter how long you protest, we are going to remove subsidy. We can do it. We are educated enough.”
