Andre Onana Retires From Cameroon National Team At 26

Twenty-six-year-old Andre Onana, Cameroon’s first-choice goalkeeper, has retired from international football after a dispute with head coach Rigobert Song at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

According to coach Rigobert Song, Andre Onana requested to sit out of Cameroon’s second group game against Serbia during the World Cup.

Afterward, he was expelled from the national team and did not play again as he left Qatar for Cameroon. He made only one appearance in which he conceded a goal before he left Qatar.

Onana, 26, announced on Friday that his “journey with the Cameroonian national team has come to an end.”

The Inter Milan player continued, “Players come and go, names fade, but Cameroon comes before any player or person.

“Cameroon remains forever, as does my passion for the national team and for our people, who have always backed us no matter how challenging the situation was.”

After making his debut in 2016, Onana went on to earn 34 caps for the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.

Brazil and Switzerland advanced to the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup while Cameroon was eliminated at the group stage without Onana.

Andre Onana who joined Inter Milan as a free agent from Ajax on July 1, 2022, is contracted to the Italian club until June 30, 2027.

Since he arrived at the Italian club, the goalie has played 13 times, conceded 16 goals, and kept five clean sheets.
