Why Edouard Mendy Rejected Chelsea’s 6-Year Contract

Edouard Mendy has turned down a new six-year deal with Chelsea because he feels his earnings are not being treated with enough “respect”.

Recall that Chelsea paid £22 million for Edouard Mendy to join the club in 2020 from French club Rennes, and he has since made 104 appearances for The Blues.

He was a star at Stamford Bridge at first, helping the team win the Champions League in 2020–2021 and receiving FIFA’s best goalkeeper award in 2021, but a combination of injuries and poor form cost him his position as the starter this season.

A report by The Sun claimed that Mendy, whose current contract with the club expires in 2025, has turned down the club’s offer of a new six-year dear because of a payment issue.

According to the report, Mendy’s rival goalkeeper at Chelsea, Kepa Arrizabalaga, presently earns almost twice the salary Mendy earns at the club per week.

Hence, the 30-year-old Senegalese goalie is reportedly seeking a salary comparable to that of Kepa, the most expensive goalkeeper in the world after moving to Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao in 2018 for £72 million.

A contract standoff exists between the two parties as Chelsea reportedly withdrew its initial offer to Mendy to maintain its position during negotiations.

According to reports, three clubs, AC Milan, Nice, and Monaco, are keeping an eye on Mandy’s status and would be interested in signing the goalkeeper if he fails to reach an agreement with Chelsea.

After helping Senegal win the African Cup of Nations earlier this year, Mendy was a member of the team that fell to England in the World Cup’s round of 16.
