At the Olympic Games in Paris 2024, men will be eligible to participate in artistic swimming, formerly known as synchronized swimming.

Up to two men may be chosen for the eight-person team artistic swimming event, according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Since 2015, men have been participating in artistic swimming at the World Championships but have no room to do so at Olympic Games.

Since its introduction at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, it has only been available to women.

Italian Giorgio Minisini, who along with Lucrezia Ruggiero won two gold medals at the global mixed duet championships in Hungary in June praised the decision to include men in the game.

He said: “Our sport’s evolution towards inclusivity is going on fast forward.

“This decision from the IOC and World Aquatics will help us become an example for the whole Olympic movement.”

In the inaugural mixed duet technical event in 2015, American Bill May became the first male world champion, marking another historic moment. Just like Minisini, Bill May would be very excited that men can compete in Artistic Swimming at the forthcoming Olympics.

However, some female swimmers have consistently protested the participation of men in the sport.

Varvara Subbotina, a former world champion from Russia, told Sport Express in August that women alone should compete in the sport due to the “aesthetics” of men’s legs.
