Note that Pep Guardiola has been the manager of Manchester City since 2016. Under his leadership, City has won nine major titles, including five Premier League titles, but they are yet to win any European hardware.

They came the closest to winning the Champions League in 2021, but Chelsea, a rival from the Premier League, overcame them in the final.

Aside from the final loss in Portugal, they lost to Real Madrid in the previous season’s semifinal, have exited at the quarterfinal stage three times, and started Guardiola’s reign with a loss to Monaco in the last 16.

Despite the misfortunes of Pep Guardiola and his players in the Champions League, the major title that has eluded City so far, the owners of the club decided to extend his contract.

Recall that while the Premier League season was on hold due to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Guardiola extended his contract with City till 2025.

Ahead of Manchester City’s EFL round of 16 clash with Liverpool scheduled to kick off at 20:00 on Thursday, Pep Guardiola noted the importance of the Champions League title to City.

He said: “It’s not the only one but I admit it’s the trophy we want and my period here will not be complete if we don’t win it,” said Guardiola.

“I will do everything in the time we have together but I’d say the same before. It’s the trophy we don’t have and we’ll try to do it. I have the feeling they’ll get it sooner or later.”

In the 2022-2023 season, Manchester City has been drawn against German side RB Leipzig in the last 16 of the Champions League. This means that Guardiola and his boys are still in the running for the title this season.
