The Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) has reacted to the ruling of the Federal High Court Abuja on Monday which sentenced its Director-General, Doyin Okupe, to jail.

Naija News reports that Okupe, right-hand man to the LP presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was sentenced to a two-year jail term today after he was found guilty of money laundering but given the option of paying a fine.

Okupe was earlier convicted by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu who considered a money laundering case brought before the court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on alleged money laundering and criminal breach of trust to the tune of N702 million valid.

Reacting, however, to the court ruling, the party’s PCC said it has paid the sum of N13m fine following the court’s verdict.

The PCC Media Officer, Diran Onifade, confirmed this on Monday evening while speaking ahead of the party’s rally in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.

He said as the party that respects the rule of law; its officials will obey court judgments promptly. Onifade, however, said appealing the judgment is a personal decision of Okupe and that the PCC cannot influence that.
