Akwa Ibom: Wife, Supporters Campaign For YPP Governorship Candidate Despite Been Imprisoned
The wife of the governorship candidate of the Young Peoples Party (YPP) in Akwa Ibom State, Albert Bassey Akpan and his supporters on Friday commence the campaign on his behalf.
Naija News learnt that the rally was led by a retired assistant inspector-general of police, who happens to be Akpan’s running mate, Asuquo Amba.
The campaign rally was held on Friday at Etim Ekpo LGA of the state.
Recall that the Federal High Court sitting in Akwa Ibom State two weeks ago sentenced Akpan who is the lawmaker representing Akwa Ibom Northeast senatorial district to prison for corruption.
A six-count charge was levelled against Akpan by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The charges bordering on money laundering and receipt of exotic cars worth N204 million from Jide Omokore, an associate of Diezani Allison-Madueke, a former minister of petroleum resources.
Despite the ruling by the court, the campaign on Friday had in attendance hundreds of people.
The wife of the YPP governorship candidate, Imabong while addressing supporters said no prison will stop the wish of the people.
She said, “Senator Bassey Albert – OBA is still on the ballot. [He] will win and not be despaired. No prison is big enough to stop the yearning of the people.”
The chairman of the campaign council, Emem Akpabio on his own part said the senator’s imprisonment is “a temporary setback designed to test their faith and propel the YPP to the height of freedom.”
Akpabio likened the senator’s imprisonment to that of former President Nelson Mandela and Joseph in the Bible.
Nyeneime Andy, YPP chairman in the state, said the party has gotten stronger in Akwa Ibom.
Andy said, “As a party, we have been intimidated, but with God, we are stronger
“Akwa Ibom people have taken a decision that there is no other religion apart from Christianity, and we worship no one apart from God.”
