1. CBN Restricts Cash Withdrawals To N100,000 Per Week

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has commenced moves to limit over-the-counter cash withdrawals by individuals and corporate entities to N100,000 and N500,000 per week, respectively.

Naija News reports that this was made known in a circular issued by the CBN on Tuesday.

According to Nigeria’s apex bank, the new policy will take effect nationwide on January 9, 2023.

The CBN stated that when the policy is implemented all cash withdrawals in excess of the above mentioned restrictions will be subject to processing costs of 5 and 10 per cent, respectively.

This online newspaper reports that this is coming after President Muhammadu Buhari unveiled the newly redesigned N200, N500, and N1000 banknotes.

Recall that the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, in October, revealed that the apex bank had lost track of N2.7 trillion of the country’s currency currently in circulation.

Emefiele disclosed that about 80 per cent of the country’s currency in circulation were outside the vaults of commercial banks across the country, accusing Nigerians of hoarding bank notes and refusing to take them to financial institutions.

2. Tinubu Speaks On Backing Peter Obi Or Atiku For 2023 Presidency

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu has opened up on whom he would endorse between his two major opponents if he were not running for president.

Naija News reports that the front runners for the 2023 presidential election are Peter Obi of the Labour Party, Bola Tinubu of the APC and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Tinubu, while speaking in an interview with the BBC, explained that he would not pick any of his opponents if he were not running for president.

According to him, Atiku and Obi lack confidence and are not qualified enough to run the country.

He went on to state that he is the only one out of the trio who is capable enough to lead Nigeria.

3. Buhari Presents Two Nominees As CBN Deputy Governors

President Muhammadu Buhari has requested the national assembly to screen his nominees as deputy governors of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Naija News understands that the Nigerian leader forwarded the names of Aisha Ahmed and Edward Adamu to the Senate for confirmation.

As contained in a letter read on the floor during Tuesday’s plenary by Senate President Ahmad Lawan, Buhari is asking the lawmakers to confirm the nominees to serve for a second and final term at the apex Bank as deputy governors.

Meanwhile, President Buhari is also asking the Upper Chamber to confirm the appointment of Ambassador Ayuba Jacob as a member of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).

Naija News reports that Aisha is the current Deputy Governor of the CBN. She was first confirmed for the position in 2018 after a screening by the senate.

4. 2023: Vote APC Or We Deal With You – Alhassan Ado Doguwa

The majority leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa has been caught on camera threatening to deal with those who won’t vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The APC lawmaker representing Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency of Kano State made the declaration during a campaign rally.

Speaking to his supporters in Hausa language, the lawmaker said: “On election day, it is either you vote for APC or we deal with you mercilessly.”

Though the date and venue of the speech could not be independently verified by Naija News as of press time, the video went viral on Tuesday, 6th December, 2022.

5. Chatham House: Tinubu Was Showcased Like A Packaged Invalid – Dele Momodu Slams APC Presidential Candidate Handlers

The Director, Strategic Communications of the National Election Management Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Dele Momodu has on Tuesday berated the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, over his engagement at the Chatham House, United Kingdom.

Naija News recalls that Tinubu’s decision to delegate some of the questions he was asked to APC chieftains including the Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and former Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi was greeted with a lot of criticism from Nigerians

However, Tinubu explained that his decision was based on the need to show his spirit of team-ship.

Reacting to the occurrence via an article titled Weep not for Tinubu but Nigeria,’ Momodu insisted that APC were ‘window-dressing’ Tinubu on a global stage.

The PDP chieftain slammed the handlers of the APC flagbearer for causing the nation a huge embarrassment on a global stage.

He argued that it would be preferable to showcase the former Lagos Governor with his gaffes as everyone is bound to make mistakes rather than shutting him up.

6. 2023: Only God Can Decide The Fate Of Nigeria – Sultan

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar has told Nigerians not to bother about the forthcoming election breaking Nigeria because the fate of the country lies in God’s hands.

According to him, he doesn’t believe that the 2023 general election which people are painting as a make-or-break election for Nigeria would divide the country.

Naija News reports that the sultan, who is the Co-Chairman of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC), gave this assurance to Nigerians at the NIREC 4th Quarter 2022 meeting. in Abuja.

Naija News learnt that the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Daniel Okoh, who is also the Co-Chairman of NIREC, said at the meeting that questions and doubts are being expressed about Nigeria’s capacity and political will to conduct free, fair, credible and peaceful elections.

However, the sultan submitted that he didn’t believe the 2023 polls as speculated by most Nigerians would be a make-or-break election for Nigeria, noting that “I don’t believe in that, I refuse to believe in that. It is just an election in that people will go out, cast their vote in peace and whoever emerges as the leader will be the leader of this country.

7. Stop The Master-Slave Treatment And Pay Our Entitlements – ASUU Knocks FG

The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has accused the federal government of Nigeria of treating lecturers in public universities as slaves.

ASUU stated this in a statement on Monday issued by the union’s president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke at the end of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the body held at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Cross River State.

The statement condemned the decision of the government not to pay the eight months’ salary arrears to ASUU members after the lecturers called off their strike action.

It also said the half salary (prorated salary) paid to members for the month of October is unacceptable.

Osodeke further said the drive by the government to introduce student loans goes against every logic and shows the government is not ready to fund public education.

8. 2023: Nigerians In Diaspora Drag Buhari, INEC, Others To Court Over Voters’ Registration

Some Nigerians in the diaspora have dragged President Muhammadu Buhari, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and it’s Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu and the Federal Republic of Nigeria to court over their exclusion in the voters register ahead of the 2023 general election.

Naija News reports that these Nigerians living in the United Kingdom and various parts if the world in a suit marked FHC/ ABJ/ CS/2119/2022, are praying the court to stop President Buhari and INEC from further proceeding with the 2023 electioneering process until INEC’s voter register and bio-data base are updated to accommodate them as registered voters.

They said it was their fundamental rights to vote in the 2023 general elections, therefore INEC has to include them in the register voter to enable them exercise their civic rights at the polls next year and every other time no matter where they are in the world.

The suit, which was filed on behalf of the plaintiffs, Barrister Chikwe Nkemnacho and Kenneth Azubuike Nkemnacho, who both lives in the United Kingdom by Augustine Temfeh-Nkemnachob has prayed the Federal High Court in Abuja to declare that they are entitled to participate in the electoral process by being registered to vote in 2023 and in all elections wherever they are domiciled worldwide in line with sections 13, 14, 42 and 17 of the 1999 Constitution.

The plaintiffs said they instituted the suit on behalf of other Nigerians in the diaspora worldwide.

They also prayed the court to declare that there is still sufficient time for INEC to comply with provisions of sections 13, 14 and 15 of the 1999 Constitution, noting that unless they are allowed to vote in the 2023 elections and subsequent ones, their fundamental rights as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution would be grossly violated.

9. Supreme Court Speaks On DSS Interrogating CJN, Ariwoola

The Department of State Service (DSS) on Tuesday allegedly interrogated the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Olukayode Ariwoola over alleged pro-Wike political remarks.

The Supreme Court in reaction to the report however said the CJN was not interrogated by the secret police.

According to the apex court, five Justices of the Supreme Court are not calling for the resignation from office by CJN over the same issue.

The Director of Information and Press of the Court, Festus Akande on Tuesday called on people behind the report to desist in their own interests.

The Supreme Court had reacted after Peoples Gazette stated that Justice Ariwoola was been grilled by DSS.
