2023 Election: Plot To Expel Babachir Lawal From APC Thickens

The plot to expel the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, from the All Progressives Congress (APC) thickened over the weekend.

Naija News learned that the plot to throw Lawal out of the APC was due to his opposition to the party’s Muslim-Muslim Presidential ticket fielded for the 2023 general elections.

The former SGF, who leads a group of northern Christian politicians in the APC, in a recent interview adopted the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi.

Lawal also played down the chances of his former ally and the APC flagbearer, Bola Tinubu, ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

However, there were strong indications over the weekend that some APC strategists had advised that Lawal be expelled from the ruling party.

In a chat with Vanguard, an APC stalwart, who pleaded anonymity, disclosed that two things have been hampering the move to throw out the former SGF.

He said Lawal cannot be thrown out without the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari who is seen as one of his “godfathers”.

The source said the second reason is that those who want him expelled from the party have not got the buy-in of Lawal’s ward executives in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

Regarding the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, the source said the Bauchi-born politician is no longer a member of the APC, adding that he had since dumped the ruling party for the PDP.

“They want the process to emanate from the executives. As for Dogara, you had Asiwaju saying the other day that the man is no longer a member of the APC and that he had since resigned from his membership of APC and joined the PDP. Dogara and the PDP have not denied that,” the source said.
