A one-storey building was gutted by fire on Friday (today) on Udensi Street, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital.
Reports revealed that the building caught fire around 9 AM and continued to burn until about 1:30 PM.
Eyewitnesses told The PUNCh that the fire was suspected of having been caused by a surge in the electricity supply in the area.
On Thursday, gunmen suspected to be kidnappers abducted the Oloso of Oso at Ajowa-Akoko, in Akoko North-West local government area of Ondo State, Oba Clement Jimoh Olukotun.
Naija News learnt that the gunmen attacked the monarch’s residence around 10:15 pm on Thursday, forcefully entered the monarch’s palace, and whisked him away to an unknown destination.
It was reported that the gunmen gained access to his residence after destroying his door with gunshots.
A source that spoke on the incident with Leadership said the gunmen knocked on the door, but noticed that occupants were not ready to open, hence the need for them to shut the door.
According to the source, the sound of the gunshots caused pandemonium in the border town, as nobody could rescue the monarch.
The source said, “When they came, they surrounded the building and ordered the monarch and other occupants to open the door and surrender willingly, but nobody answered. At this point, they started shooting.
“They destroyed the main door and entered. They terrorised Kabiyesi and his family members before dragging him out and took him away. None of the family members had been contacted, but we knew they were kidnappers.”
The incident was confirmed by the spokesperson of the state police command, Funmilayo Odunlami.
Odunlami disclosed that operatives had been deployed to probe the attack.
The spokesperson said, “It is true but the details of the incident is still not clear. However, Police from the Divisional Police headquarters at Oke-Agbe, headquarters of Akoko Northwest Local Government Area of Ondo State have been deployed in the town to launch an investigation into the incident.”
