I Couldn't Bring Myself To Do It - Wole Soyinka Speaks On Voting For Buhari

Nigerian Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, has refuted claims of voting for Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari or calling on people to vote for him in 2015.

Naija News reports that Soyinka, during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwu, said not casting his vote for Buhari did not stop the masses from voting him to power.

According to him, the situation of the country was slightly below ground zero when Buhari assumed office and had urged that he should be given a chance.

Wole Soyinka added that he was convinced that Buhari is a born-again democrat and disappointment which could probably happen in his administration is part of democracy.

He said: “I never, at any time voted or called on people to vote for Buhari. I refused to go to vote on that day because I could not bring myself to vote for Buhari.

“However, in the end, the people chose him, and when he was there, I said we should give him a chance — he’s met a nation at just slightly below ground zero.

“I called him and told him I’m convinced he’s a born-again democrat. I believe he had learned sufficient lessons to be called a born-again democrat.

“And so, in an interview with BBC when the lady tried to ask me a question, I said leave me alone, he’s a born-again democrat — give him a chance. Then she asked a question, what happens if he disappoints? That’s part of democracy, I said then we go back to the barricades. That section is never quoted, because people don’t want to go back to the barricades.

“In any case, even if somebody is a born-again democrat in the morning, is it unknown for that person, then, to become a born-again Fulani herdsman in the evening? And when that happens, you take a position. This is what democracy is all about.”
